The Most Happy (The Unhappy Song)
This song is written from the perspective of Anne Boelyn, the second of Henry VIII’s six wives and the first to be beheaded. ‘The Most Happy’ was the motto Anne took when she finally married her king and secured her place in the most dangerous court in the world. I wrote this song after reading letters between Henry and Anne during their courtship. Anne wrote her last letter to Henry when she was in the Tower of London awaiting execution and Henry was proceeding with plans to marry her rival (and eventual successor), Jane Seymour. She signed it, ‘Your faithful servant and wife, Anne’.
lyrics
Henry love, my sovereign King, I come to give you everything
My faithful hand, my heart, my soul, so we can make this kingdom whole
Henry love, your Queen has come to provide an heir and rightful son
Let's rule the throne, mend broken ties with diplomacy and faithful allies
Henry love, let us steal away, let's leave the parties and silly games
We'll have some time, just you and I, away from Court and watchful eyes
Henry love, a daughter's born, she has my eyes, she has your brawn
I'll have a son all in good time, I will not fail the Tudor line
Henry love, don't listen to them, the cold winds from which rumours stem
Swirling like a dervish of thorns, Henry love, I have been warned
Henry love, oh hello Jane, I am accused of hateful claims
Incest and adultery, false charges for The Most Happy
Henry love, you believe it so, to put a Seymour on the throne
And now I sit in the tower alone, no hope, no friends, no hand to hold
Henry I'm condemned to die, my heart it breaks, my soul it cries
God save the King, good prince, good man, your faithful servant and wife Anne
