about

The Boy You Married (The Apprehensive Song)
This song completely undid me when I first heard it. It tackles the still-taboo topic of domestic violence. So often we ask, ‘Why does she stay?’ I hope this song will give some insight into the complexities and control in relationships and our hushed reactions to them.

lyrics

The clock upon the kitchen wall shows only half past nine
You know you'll hear him coming through the door at any time
You pray to God he's sober, for you've tried your very best
To please him, and if you've failed, you know you'll spend the rest
Of the evening on blended knee, begging him to stop
While the anger and the fear go on and on

Ch) But you say that you still love him, if he'd just stay off the booze
You try each time to understand, but every time you lose
'Cause somewhere in the dark of night the evil slips away
And leaves the boy you married by your side
And the tears you cry will rip you open wide

Morning comes, the boy is gone, the man is in his place
Well he protests his love but you can't see it in his face
Whatever thing has hold of him has gripped him tight as steel
And squeezed the life from out of him and he no longer feels
All the pain that he has caused you, all the hurt that he can't heal
And the anger and the fear go on and on

Ch)

Your friends all ask you why you stay and you say nothing's wrong
And even you believe the lie and so you carry on
But sometimes you stay at home for days while the bruises start to fade
And you wonder to yourself if perhaps it might be you that made
All of these things happen, all the sorrow and the strife
Would he be a better man if you're a better wife?
What if you should leave him, try and start another life?
Would the anger and the fear go on and on?

Ah, but you say that you still love him, if he'd just stay off the booze
You try each time to understand, but every time you lose
'Cause somewhere in the dark of night the evil slips away
And leaves the boy you married by your side
And the tears you cry will rip you open wide
The tears will rip you open wide
